ASH Scotland welcomes Holyrood committee’s recommendation to approve regulations banning disposable vapes

03 September 2024

ASH Scotland welcomes today’s decision by the Scottish Parliament’s Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee to recommend that the draft Environmental Protection (Single-use Vapes) (Scotland) Regulations 2024 be approved.

The Committee’s decision was taken during this morning’s session (Tuesday 3 September 2024) in which they considered evidence submitted by stakeholders, including ASH Scotland, and from Gillian Martin MSP, the Acting Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero and Energy, and Scottish Government officials.

Shiela Duffy, Chief Executive of ASH Scotland, said: “As disposable recreational e-cigarettes are the product of choice for the majority of youngsters who vape, we warmly welcome the Net Zero, Energy and Transport Committee’s recommendation that the draft Environmental Protection (Single-use Vapes) (Scotland) Regulations 2024 be approved.

“Banning these health and environmental harming products is a vital step towards halting the alarming upsurge of children vaping in Scotland.

“With most disposable vaping products containing high levels of nicotine, which is extremely addictive, as well as toxic chemicals that have not been safety tested for inhalation and can damage lung health, the ban coming into force on 1 April 2025 is necessary as a measure to protect the health of children now and future generations.”
